Information from the text: (key) Buddhism in Angkor The differences between Buddhism and Christianity
Buddhism was practiced in Angkor at the end of the 12th century. King Jayavarman V|| made Mahayana Buddhism the state religion when he was in control. He decided to make the Bayon temple and to construct it in the middle of Angkor Thom. The images on the temple had the four sublime states of mind: kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. The people believed it was possible to go to heaven after a single life. Jayavarman V||| destroyed statues of buddha and replaced them with ones of Hindu gods.
Both Buddhism and Christianity have religious writing in common. Christianity and Buddhism both have branches and current religions. Christianity has the Bible whilst Buddhists do not believe in the bible. Christians have one God whilst Buddhists have many. They originated in different settings
What the text means:
-Compared to Hinduism, Buddhism was not practiced in Angkor much at all.
-Christians follow the Bible and Jesus, their religion originated in Israel.
-Buddhists follow Buduh, their religion began in India.
Questions about the text:
Were there any secret Christians in Angkor? Why did Jayavarman V|| bring Buddhism to the Angkor region?
OPINION PIECE: Overall, Buddhism did not last as the major religion of Angkor for long but, it left long lasting effects on the Khmer Empire. King Jayavarman V|| introduced the religion to the people during his reign as king at the end of the 12th century and that was the only time Buddhism was strong because the kings before were unaware of Buddhism and the kings after, found Buddhism as a threat to Hinduism. There are many similarities and differences between Buddhism and Christianity which include; the fact that both have their own religious writing (example: Christians have the bible); they both have modern religious branches; Christians follow one God (Jesus) and Buddhists follow many; and Christianity originated in Israel whilst Buddhism began in India. Buddhism and Christianity are very different in some ways but, in other ways the religions are extremely similar.
Picture Analysis: (Olivia Craus)
See: -Stone statue of a Buddhist god.
-Double faced, possibly has four faces.
-Wearing intricate jewellery.
-Hands in a praying position, with eyes closed.
-The statue is of a male.
-Material is a brown- green colour
Think: -The colour of the statue suggests that it as built a long time ago an has gone through a lot of weathering.
-The people in Angkor could have come to this statue to worship and praise this god.
-This sculpture would have taken along time to make because it is so intricate.
-There are probably numerous statues just like this one around the same area
Wonder: -Who made the sculpture?
-When was this sculpture made?
-Did anyone attempt to destroy this sculpture because it is not Hindi?

In Cambodia 90% of the population is theravada buddhist, 1% christian and the remaining of the population is islam, atheism, or animism.
Buddhism has existed in cambodia since at least the 5th century CE. Cambodia state religion is theravada buddhism since the 13th century CE, and is currently estimated the be the faith of 90% of the population. Islam is the religion of a majority of the cham in cambodian. According to po Dharma, there were 150,000 to 200,000 muslims in cambodia as late as 1975. Theravada buddhism spread in the late years of the Khmer Empire and is considered the religion of the ethnic khmer. Animist practices and what are called brahmanistic practices are also part of the culture and are deeply intermingled with the everyday practice of buddhism.
Christianity was introduced into cambodia by roman catholic missionaries in 1660.
However, it made a little headway at first, mostly among buddhists. In 1972 there were probably about 20,000 christians in cambodia. Most of them were roman catholics. According to vatican statistic in 1953 members of the roman catholic church in cambodia numbers 120,000.
King Suryavarman II is responsible for the construction of the Angkor Wat temple complex. He dedicated the temple to Vishnu, the Supreme God of Vaishnavite Hinduism, which remained its patron deity until the Cambodian people consecrated Angkor Wat to Theravada Buddhismin the 14th or 15th Century. The theravada buddhism spread in the later years of the Khmer Empire and is traditionally considered the religion of ethnic Khmer.
